About NFCC

Established in 1998, the National Foster Care Coalition (NFCC) is a unique partnership of member organizations and individuals dedicated to improving the lives of children, youth, and adults in and from foster care through political and public will building. As part of their compassionate commitment, NFCC members advocate on behalf of children, youth, and families involved with the foster care system; support local, regional, and national foster care initiatives; offer significant levels of training and technical assistance; and provide education and information about foster care to decision makers at the local, state, and federal levels.

NFCC members are passionate about engaging youth in all levels of the foster care system, supporting their participation in their own case planning and on larger systems reform initiatives. NFCC believes that youth involvement must be an integral component of all child welfare efforts.

NFCC Current Initiatives

  • Emerging Youth Leaders: Working with young people who are, or have been, in foster care to strengthen their voice in decisions about policies and practices that affect their lives.
  • National Foster Care Month: NFCC is an active partner in National Foster Care Month, a public awareness campaign held annually in May.
  • Publications: Building on the success of our Frequently Asked Questions series, NFCC continues to develop informational materials in print and online that support practitioners and policymakers in their efforts to help youth make successful transitions from foster care to adulthood.
  • Training and Technical Assistance: Currently under contract with the National Resource Center for Family-Centered Practice and Permanency Planning at the Hunter College School of Social Work, NFCC supports the development and dissemination of training for child welfare supervisors in public child welfare agencies.
  • Information Clearinghouse: NFCC acts as a source of information on child welfare policy and programs to practitioners, policymakers, and the media.
  • Connecting Research and Policy: Executive Director Robin Nixon, a 2006 William T. Grant Foundation Distinguished Fellow, is working with Dr. Mark Courtney at the University of Washington to bridge research and advocacy around the issue of youth aging out of foster care.

Fostering Healthy Connections through Peer Mentoring

The Child Welfare League of America (CWLA), in partnership with FosterClub, has secured funding from the New York Life Foundation to launch a three-year initiative, Fostering Healthy Connections. It’s a unique peer mentoring program in which former foster youth mentor children and youth currently in the foster care system in order to develop healthy connections to: improve their educational and behavioral outcomes and strengthen their interpersonal relationships.
