WASHINGTON, DC —“We have been part of National Foster Care Month since 1999 and I think this will be the best ever,” said Robin Nixon, executive director of the National Foster Care Coalition. “We have more partners and more resources and our young people – who are truly the best spokespersons – are ready to make the difference during Foster Care Month and all year long.”

Throughout the month of May, groups and individuals across the country will recognize the people who help more that 513,000 children who are currently in care and encourage many more to get involved. “Change a Lifetime,” this year’s theme, underscores that concerned, nurturing adults -- no matter how much time they have to give -- can do something that will for a young person in foster care.

“We hope to inspire and engage many more individuals to take action in support of these children and their families. There are so many ways a person can positively affect the life of a child in foster care,” added Virginia Pryor of Casey Family Programs and chair of National Foster Care Month.

National Foster Care Coalition
The National Foster Care Coalition (NFCC) is a unique partnership of more than 40 national and local organizations, as well as individuals, building public will to improve the lives of children, youth, and young adults who are, or who have been, in foster care.  Through advocacy, education, and networking, NFCC works to strengthen our ability as a nation to support the positive development of every young person who must spend time in the foster care system. We believe that young people themselves are the experts on foster care, and our best allies in efforts to strengthen the services, supports, and opportunities available to them.

National Foster Care Month Partnership
The National Foster Care Coalition is a member of the National Foster Care Month partnership, which is led by Casey Family Programs. Other partners include the Annie E. Fostering Healthy Connections through Peer Mentoring

The Child Welfare League of America (CWLA), in partnership with FosterClub, has secured funding from the New York Life Foundation to launch a three-year initiative, Fostering Healthy Connections. It’s a unique peer mentoring program in which former foster youth mentor children and youth currently in the foster care system in order to develop healthy connections to: improve their educational and behavioral outcomes and strengthen their interpersonal relationships.
